It’s Official, But What’s Next? USP 800: Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs {Webinar April 2016}

Original webinar presented: April 19, 2016 by Fred Massoomi, PharmD, FASHP.

In this program, Dr. Fred Massoomi addressed each of the 18 sections of USP 800 and focused on what compliance looks like for a comprehensive safe hazardous drug safety program.

The United States Pharmacopeia approved General Chapter 800, “Handling of Hazardous Drugs in Healthcare Settings” on February 1, 2016. While full compliance for organizations handling these drugs isn’t until 2018, now is the time to understand and undertake changes for compliance with these new guidelines.

What do healthcare institutions need to know to be compliant? What should sites do to prepare for compliance? Having a finalized compliance chapter approved well in advance of expected compliance dates allows sites to prepare and plan. An effective hazardous drug safety plan must focus on defining what is hazardous on your formulary, as well as safe handling, compounding, administration and proper pharmaceutical waste disposal processes.

USP 800 topics of discussion:
• Review of historical, current and approved hazardous drug safety standards
• Summary of existing hazardous drug handling standards
• Discussion of the challenges in meeting the new and emerging regulatory requirments for safe handling of hazardous products.
• Review of available resources
